With the ever-growing rate of smartphone and tablet use amongst students, it’s no surprise that app-based instruction is trending in education right now. Mobile educational apps provide students with the flexibility of learning anywhere, at any time.

Some of the most engaging applications for education provide an intuitive platform, collaborative, immersive, and challenging content, have game-like features, allow students to create, and are visually appealing. Using the ActivConnect coupled with your Promethean display to leverage educational apps is a great way to keep students engaged, working together, and having fun as they learn! Listed below are some engaging app suggestions for your ActivConnect, along with pictures and ideas for incorporating the apps into your daily instruction.

Operation Math Code Squad is a multi-touch app intended for students to practice basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. This app is multiplayer, game-like, and engaging, and it’s suitable for varying ages and grade levels. Using this app on your Promethean display is a great experience because it’s multi-touch. Try using this app during math centers!

 

Set the stage for reading success with this delightfully interactive educational app. Kids will have a blast learning their ABCs and building vocabulary with the adorable Endless monsters from Endless Alphabet. Each word features an interactive puzzle game with talking letters and a short animation illustrating the definition. Before you know it, your students will be using words like gargantuan and cooperate! This app is most suitable in Pre-K, KG, 1st grade, ESL, and Special Education classes. Endless Alphabet is especially engaging on your Promethean display as multiple students hold down letters that make sounds as they spell new words with their friends! Endless Alphabet comes free with 7 word puzzles and animations. A one-time in-app purchase will unlock the rest. There are a few other educational apps created by Originator Kids with the same look and feel as Endless ABC that are also available for download in the Google Play Store.


Deceptively challenging physics puzzles for your brain with Brain it On! Students can strategize together to complete these physics puzzles. Brain It On! is challenging, game-like, and lends itself to student collaboration. This app is appropriate for students aged 8+.



Lead an expedition from your ActivPanel as students follow along from their devices—incorporate VR headsets if your school has a set. With this Google Expeditions, you can virtually take your students anywhere in the world! Google Expeditions is immersive and visually engaging.

 


Google Earth supports multiple points of touch, pinch, and zoom. Take your students on virtual field trips to anywhere in the world, including under the sea! Select the “street view” icon for a more immersive experience. This app is appropriate for any grade level and a variety of content areas.

 


ActivCast is a built-in app on the ActivConnect device connected to your Promethean display. If you’re not using ActivCast to mirror student devices, your students are missing out! The greatest thing about the ActivCast app is that it supports iPads, Macs, Chromebooks, Windows, and Android devices. Whatever device your students are using, they’re able to wirelessly connect and show off their own work! This app is great for any content area and grade level. With ActivCast, you’re able to mirror up to four devices to your ActivPanel simultaneously, which allows for student collaboration. The security features ActivCast offers include the teacher’s ability to generate a pin code, which means students have to physically be in the room to access mirroring. Before the student begins mirroring, the teacher has the options of selecting “Allow” or “Deny” on the board before the student device is displayed. Once you’re ready to start having student devices mirrored onto your ActivPanel, make sure the students have the proper application on their device to do so. An award-winning app based on Common Core State Standards, Duck Duck Moose Reading teaches phonics and reading skills in a fun zoo-themed adventure. With word and letter activities, kids learn by playing with flamingos, monkeys, lions, and more.

Include DDM Reads as a center at the ActivPanel for student collaboration. DDM Reads is a great app for Pre-K, Kindergarten, ELL, and Special Education. Duck Duck Moose offers a variety of apps available for download for elementary math and literacy.

 


Cell World is an interactive app that gives students a 3D look at the organelles of a cell. Definitions of the organelles are read aloud as you and your students virtually explore a cell. This app is engaging because of the 3D, high-definition viewing experience as well as the user’s ability to easily navigate and zoom in on different parts of the cell. Cell World is most appropriate for Science/Biology students learning about the different organelles that make up a cell.

 

 

Take your students on high-definition, LIVE, virtual field trips to various landmarks all over the world with EarthCam. This app is useful for all grade levels and can be applied to any content area.

 


With Word Cookies, students can easily improve their vocabulary, concentration, and spelling skills. Students can work together to solve challenging word puzzles while having fun. Word cookies is great for students practicing sight words, high-frequency vocabulary, and spelling skills. This app is appropriate for a variety of grade levels.

 

Students will quickly learn basic Spanish vocabulary with exciting, colorful, and addictive game play through Spanish School Bus for Kids! This app is perfect to help young learners expand their world knowledge while strengthening their Spanish vocabulary. This app is appropriate for PreK–2nd-grade students learning Spanish. Spanish School Bus has a variety of rhyming songs to help students remember new vocabulary. This app is engaging because of its game-like features as well as the content.




3… 2… 1… ACTION! With Toontastic 3D, students can draw, animate, and narrate their own cartoons. It’s as easy as play. Toontastic is a powerful and playful way to create interstellar adventures, breaking news reports, video game designs, family photo albums, or anything else you might imagine! With Toontastic students can design their own characters with 3D drawing tools or add a picture of themselves with photos. This app includes dozens of built-in songs, three Story Arcs for digital storytelling (Short Story, Classic, & Science Report), an idea lab full of playful stories, and characters and settings to inspire new adventures.

Once your class finishes their video, they’re able to export their work to the library to share with friends and family.

Using Toontastic 3D on your Promethean display allows students to collaboratively create stories based on whichever topic you choose. Toontastic 3D assists students in collaborative storying, retelling, and sequencing story moments that can support students in their acquisition of oracy and their understanding of the world, both real and imagined.

 To record student voices, this app requires the use of a webcam. Connect your USB webcam to the USB port of your ActivConnect, and you and your students will be ready to record audio. This app can be applied to almost any content area and all grade levels.

 


Math facts are fun with Monster Math, the educational game that improves over 70 math skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions. Students in grades KG, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th really enjoy math with Monster Math. Monster Math is aligned with Common Core mathematics standards.
